Introduction

The Department of Computer Science and Technology (DCST) of Tsinghua University can be tracked back over half a century ago. In 1956, Tsinghua University established the computer major, one of the first in China. In 1958, the Department of Automatic Control was set up with computer science as one of its majors. The department was renamed the Department of Computer Engineering and Science in 1979, and the Department of Computer Science and Technology in 1984. The department started the master program in 1978 and the Ph.D program in 1981.

Through over fifty years of unremitting efforts, it has been developed into a computer science department with strong scientific research and teaching accomplishments, and has developed great influence and reputation domestically. It frequently ranks the first in national computer science assessments. In 2010 international assessment, international assessment experts unanimously agreed that "the Computer Science and Technology Department of Tsinghua University has made great progress in the past few years, and has become a world-class computer science research and teaching institution."

In October 2017, in the Best Global Universities for Computer Science in the USNews ranking, Tsinghua University ranked the 2nd, after Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In the Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings in 2017, the discipline of Computer Science of Tsinghua University ranked
the 15th.

Our department continues its historical mission to build a firstclass computer science research institution, and cultivate top-notch talents. We have conducted an impressive number of scientific research studies in computer science and attained outstanding achievements. We have trained more than 10,000 first-rate elites. And we have established collaborative relationships with many world-class universities and research institutions. We play an important role in national computer development— indeed, even in national economic development—through making significant contributions to our nation's progress in computer science and technology.

Computer science and technology is gaining momentum as a primary driver of globalization. It has become the backbone of science and technology growth, and has penetrated every aspect of social life. Computer science has proven to be a field of enormous challenges and even greater opportunities. We are determined to take a leading position in expanding its boundaries, through research and teaching of the highest quality. Our vision is that our research and our graduates will be at the forefront of the field,both at home and abroad.
